Frishta's Approach

We will avoid ‘institutionalising’ our children by running the Frishta Children’s Village with high standards of individual childcare and a engendering a family feel, a sense of community and instilling values of citizenship.

This will be achieved by establishing self-contained family units of no more than 12 children, each with a dedicated married couple as residential house parents.  This will be more expensive than housing children in large dormitories, but will give children the best possible care and start in life.

Children most in need will be selected, typically aged 0-14yrs -after the age of 14, long-term street children are unlikely to settle back into mainstream life.  For older Frishta children who may be moving on to independent life, appropriate training tailored to their abilities will be provided, to enable them to earn a living, e.g. needlework and computer skills, and will realistic given the economic and work opportunities actually available in the surrounding area.

Caring and Sharing

In order to see these children grow from street children to children who will make a positive impact on society, we believe not only in providing food and shelter, but will ensure that these children grow up in a family atmosphere of love and care to enable them to become mature and responsible citizens.

Shelter
A real home for each child.  Clothes, shoes and a warm bed will be provided to make the children comfortable.  Medical care will be provided as needed.  Girls and boys will be accommodated separately according to their age group.

Food
In order to provide a balanced, healthy diet, wholesome, nutritious food will be prepared by cooks in a well-equipped central kitchen and supplied to the homes.

Education
Priority will be given to educating the children and they will be placed in a school best suited to their needs and abilities.  We plan to have a Primary & Junior School on site for the education of children of the home to help them catch up on their missed schooling, and for the children of the local community.

Recreation
Children will be actively encouraged to participate in hobbies, crafts and sports to build confidence, teamwork, fitness and good health.  They will be taken on trips and excursions to the circus, parks and local picturesque attractions.

Discipline
Care will be taken to ensure the children to their full potential.  They will be counselled and non-formal education will be given on personal hygiene and behaviour.  To encourage independence, there will be moderate involvement in chores such as washing and cooking at weekends.

"Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in their own time of need."
